Fredy's bungalow - rooted in history

Freddy's Bungalow in Bhimtal has a fascinating history rooted in the story of the Smetacek family, a prominent name in the Kumaon hills. The bungalow was originally part of the sprawling Jones Estate, a tea estate dating back to the 1840s. The Smetacek family's connection to the property began in 1951 when Frederick Smetacek Sr., a German of Czech origin, settled in Bhimtal.

Frederick Smetacek Sr. developed a profound passion for collecting butterflies, building a renowned collection that grew to over 10,000 specimens. Much of this impressive collection is still housed in Freddy's Bungalow, with more samples in a nearby Butterfly Museum.

The bungalow later became the home of Fredy Smetacek Jr., Frederick Sr.'s son, who was also an avid butterfly collector and researcher, often known as the "Butterfly man of India." He continued to expand the family's remarkable collection.

Today, Freddy's Bungalow operates as a charming colonial-style homestay, preserving its historical essence and the legacy of the Smetacek family. It's a place where guests can not only enjoy the serene surroundings and nature but also witness the unique butterfly collection, a testament to the family's dedication to entomology. The bungalow stands as a reminder of a rich past, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of quiet charm and a deep connection to the natural world.

1. Summers (March to June):

  • Weather: Days are bright and sunny, with clear skies and a pleasant breeze, especially in the evenings. This is considered the peak season for tourism due to the ideal weather for outdoor activities like boating, hiking, and sightseeing.
  • Rainfall: Rainfall is generally low during these months, though May and June might see some scattered showers as the monsoon approaches.

2. Monsoons (July to September):

  • Weather: This is the rainy season, characterized by moderate to heavy rainfall. The entire region transforms into a lush green paradise, with mist often rolling over the lake and hills. While beautiful, heavy showers can sometimes disrupt outdoor plans and lead to road blockages or landslides. Humidity is also high during this period.
  • Rainfall: July and August are the wettest months, with average rainfall ranging from 300-520 mm (12-20 inches) per month.

3. Winters (October to February):

  • Weather: The weather is generally clear and crisp, offering spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains in the distance (though snowfall in Bhimtal itself is rare, it can occur in higher altitudes nearby like Nainital or Mukteshwar). The air is dry and invigorating.
  • Rainfall: Rainfall is minimal during these months, with November being the driest.
  • Best Time to Visit: While chilly, the period from October to December is also considered a good time to visit, especially for those who enjoy the cold and want to experience the tranquil beauty of the region without the summer crowds.
